Academic Literacy Seminar Brought Together Over 70 Participants from Around the World

On June 9, the ninth seminar in the series “Foundations of Academic Literacy for Authors of Theological Texts” took place, organized by the Eastern European Institute of Theology and Langham Publishing. The series aims to enhance authors' skills in writing theological articles for peer-reviewed scientific journals and to support their professional development in academic research, the preparation, and publication of monographs and other scholarly works. The Institute invites experts who not only share their in-depth theoretical knowledge but also offer practical insights from working with authors. Speakers include editors of reputable academic journals from Europe, the US, the UK, Australia, and Ukraine, whose experience helps participants understand the requirements of the academic environment and create texts that meet high international standards.

Previous seminars include:

  1. Main Mistakes in the Process of Writing Articles and How to Avoid Them

The ninth seminar, titled “How to Write an Article for a Peer-Reviewed Publication,” offered authors a valuable chance to explore the complexities of academic writing with Estonian theologian and editor of the Journal of European Baptist Studies , Dr. Toivo Pilli.

Participants explored not only the structure of a scholarly article but also discussed the author's responsibilities: the quality and integrity of the research, adherence to formatting guidelines – all of which reflect respect for the reader and the editorial team. The speaker offered practical advice to help overcome common challenges: how to best respond to reviewers' comments, how to stay motivated during the editing process, and how to make a scholarly text truly compelling.

The seminar concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session attended by over 100 participants from 34 countries, including Ukraine, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Ethiopia, the United States, Kenya, India, Ghana, Germany, Romania, Nigeria, the Netherlands, Canada, Italy, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Brazil, Estonia, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, American Samoa, Pakistan, Liberia, Angola, Côte d'Ivoire, and Egypt.

The Eastern European Institute of Theology sincerely thanks its partners for supporting a series of seminars aimed at improving the professional skills of authors in academic writing and scholarly research.

The first seminar in this series was held on April 15, 2022, featuring Oleg Khoma, a Ukrainian philosopher and editor of the journal Sententiae, which was the first Ukrainian philosophical journal to be indexed in Scopus. This seminar is available in Ukrainian on the Institute’s YouTube channel..
