A New Book "Light in the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Stories of Ukrainian Christians During the War" Was Recently Released

We are pleased to announce the release of a new book by the Eastern European Institute of Theology, "Light in the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Stories of Ukrainian Christians During the War," which will be available on March 19, 2025. This book, written by a group of authors, will become an important voice of Ukrainian Protestants in the context of our country's resistance to the Russian aggression and will immerse readers in their life stories, existential challenges, and theological quest.

About Book

Despite persistent stereotypes describing Protestants as distancing from society, believers of evangelical protestant churches have been fighting to save Ukraine’s statehood and help its suffering society since the first days of the war. How do they do that exactly? Those are the stories told by the twelve authors of this book, all of them fighting their good fight against evil for the sake of human dignity and freedom. Each one does it in their own way – taking up arms, chaplaincy, volunteering, educational efforts, and creativity. Yet this stance against evil is what unites such vastly different people who have found the strength to share in this book their personal experiences of the past few years. In these experiences, faith is intertwined with doubt, fear with courage, and loneliness with belonging.

Features and Highlights

The book comes in hardback and features illustrations by the famous Ukrainian artist Kateryna Sad, which will complement the text and help you to dive deeper into the atmosphere of stories and reflections. The book is intended for theologians, chaplains, religious scholars, and anyone interested in the experience of Ukrainian Protestants during the war. The book was published in partnership with the Dukh i Litera publishing house.

Book Presentation

The book will be launched on 19 March 2025 in Lviv at the Ukrainian Baptist Theological Seminary (21 Melnyk Street, Lviv). The authors will share how this book came together, tell a bit about background and highlights of their chapters. Autograph session and coffee break will take place after the presentation.

The presentation will be streamed. To participate in the presentation, you need to register.
