Seminar "The Role of Christian Churches in Building Resilient Democratic Societies" Is Available to Watch
On September 20, the 35th Methodological Theological Seminar of the Eastern European Institute of Theology was held on “The Role of Christian Churches in Building Resilient Democratic Societies.” This is the third seminar in the series on “Public Theology in the Context of Overcoming the Totalitarian Past.” The speakers at the seminar were Dr. David Kovačević, a Croatian theologian and church deacon, Dr. Katharina Kunter, a professor at the University of Helsinki, and Dr. Pavlo Shevchuk, head of the Department of Theology at the Ukrainian Evangelical Theological Seminary. At the third seminar, we talked about how Christian communities can contribute to the development of states that profess democratic values. We focused on the historical cases of several countries with a harrowing totalitarian past. In particular, we touched upon the experience of Protestant and Catholic communities in postwar Germany, especially during the GDR, and also examined the active public activity of Christian communities in Croatia during its struggle for independence. In the last lecture, we examined the public role of evangelical communities in Ukraine over the past ten years, from the beginning of the Revolution of Dignity, which resulted in Russia's military aggression against Ukraine and continues to this day.
All seminar presentations are available on the Institute's YouTube channel. Currently, the lectures are available in the original language.
The next seminar in the series “Public Theology in the Context of Overcoming the Totalitarian Past” is scheduled for November 2024. All the details will be available later on the Institute's website.
