Foundations of Academic Literacy: How to Write an Argumentative Essay

June 4, 2026

The Eastern European Institute of Theology continues the series of seminars on academic literacy and invites everyone to the thirteenth seminar, on writing essays for peer-reviewed academic journals. The seminar speaker will be Kevin Smith — a theologian, the Principal of the South African Theological Seminary, and author of the book Writing and Research: A Guide for Theological Students .

Seminar Topic: “How to Write an Argumentative Essay.” Argumentative writing is the currency of theological research and writing; however, this is not an intuitive skill. The seminar will cover the essential building blocks of writing a persuasive, scholarly essay or article.
