The Eastern European Institute of Theology announces a series of open lectures with renowned theologians, philosophers, and representatives of related humanities on pressing topics pertaining to the existence and thinking of the church in the modern world, its missionary presence in the context of the greatest scientific, political, ethical, and cultural challenges.
This year, the Institute invites everyone to attend an open lecture with David Gushee, Professor of Christian Ethics at Mercer University, USA, which will be given on October 12 at 5:00 pm Kyiv time (online). The topic of the lecture is "Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies."
Democracy is opposed or under threat by forces of reactionary Christian authoritarianism in several countries where strongman leaders claim the mantle of Christianity to defend their regimes and policies. This talk analyzes the problem and retrieves crucial resources of historic Christian faith that have for centuries defended democracy in Christian terms.
This topic is also reflected in Professor Gushee's new book Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies, which is available here.
